A Convolution of Imagined Histories
| 2009Conceived of as a dual-purposed work, A Convolution of Imagined Histories has been exhibited as a multi-channel installation as well as a single-channel piece (in theater/festival settings).
A Convolution of Imagined Histories is a High Definition video piece comprised of four works, telling four separate stories that, taken together, make up a meta-narrative.
The work is the result of imagining the visual track to the story of someone else's memories. So it is documentary and at the same time fiction. Each segment blends high-resolution digital stills, HD video, 8mm home movies (transferred to HD video) and composited images. Each work also incorporates imagery, and recreates scenes, from a series of paintings that deal with the same narrative.
The work creates an interior space – a sound and image transportation into something that resembles memory (both specific memories – in this case, second person memories – and, in some way, universal memories). What makes this duality possible is each smaller narrative’s focus on liminal spaces. They focus on the small, mundane moments that surround the dramatic (or traumatic) moments.
